OBITUARIES

Francis (Frank) George Cawley (5/6/1941-1/25/2023)

Posted: February 1, 2023

Francis George Cawley died peacefully at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD on the evening of January 25, 2023, surrounded by his loving daughter and his devoted son. Frank was born on May 6, 1941, in Washington, DC to Elmer Thomas Cawley and Margaret Anne (nee Dolan) Cawley, one of five brothers: John, Thomas, Francis, James, and William Cawley. He graduated from Chamberlain Vocational-Technical High School as an apprentice printer. In 1958, while serving as a journeyman printer at PEPCO, he became a casualty in an industrial explosion leaving him burned over sixty percent of his body. He spent two years at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC enduring multiple scores of successive skin graft surgeries, and defying the odds and expectations of his physicians, not only survived, but learned to walk again. It was here that he developed his lifelong personal philosophy: Confidence, Courage, and Determination. His high school sweetheart and future wife, Nancy Delores (nee Custer) Cawley remained by his side throughout the entire ordeal.

Frank worked in printing his whole life. First at McArdle’s Printing, then at the Washington Times, then the Washington Post, and finally serving for thirty-five years at the U. S. Government Printing Office, printing the bills and laws for the U. S. Congress published in the U. S. Congressional Record. During this time Frank became passionate about his life-long love for golfing which was both physical and psychological therapy during his convalescence and throughout his life. He married Nancy, and they raised two children in Clinton, MD: Shannon Lynn (nee Cawley) McLaughlin and Michael Patrick Cawley. Frank is survived by his two children Michael and Shannon; his son-in-law James McLaughlin; his eight grandchildren: Noah, Elisabeth, and John Cawley; and Ainsley, Dillon, Loren, Abigail, and Collin McLaughlin; one great-grandchild Mehrin Cawley, several nieces and nephews, and some lifelong personal friends.

A viewing will take place at Hardesty Funeral Home in Gambrills, MD on February 3, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral Mass will be officiated by Father Paul Breczinski at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church in Millersville, MD on February 4, 2023, at 11:00 am, followed by a wake at Nonna Angela’s Italian Bistro, 2225 Defense Hwy A, Crofton, MD 21114 at 1:00 pm, located in Priest Bridge Centre Shopping Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church and the Maryland Golf Association.
